Speak Out 03:04
SPEAK OUT If all the frozen waters started to melt down
 Words unspoken, said out loud
Songs unwoken, awake in sound If all the broken promises would be healed with time
 Dreams forgotten, return to life
Hope forsaken, reborn into the light of our love All the things we were dreaming of
And the world spins round and round, she goes
But we’re too scared to speak out loud What it’s all about If all the birds flew out, from their cage released
 Wars waging, resolved in peace
Storms raging, calmed down to breeze If all the walls of silence were torn down overnight
 Dreams forgotten, return to life
Hope forsaken, reborn into the light of our love
All the things we were dreaming of
And the world spins round and round, she goes
But we’re too scared to speak out loud because
We’re lost in love and there’s no way out
 Unless we speak,
 Unless we speak out loud
 What it’s all about
 What it’s all about

2.
Levitation 03:18
LEVITATION Heal me, heal me Heal me, heal me My body of broken glass When the light shines through the cracks I see colors and shimmers of white And slowly, I return to life When you heal me, heal me Heal me, heal me Take me down the river I no longer fear the cold Warm me when I shiver Hold me when I fall Heal me, heal me Heal me, heal me Heal me, bring me peace When you heal me, you bring me peace
3.
Time Fold 04:15
TIME FOLD Lost summer light Forever captured in my mind Pictured in frames We’re the same, but changed I hear her voice My grandma’s, not to make so much noise We’re holding hands And I recall the days we danced away I remember you saying my name Moments in time Slowly faded by the tides Feel my father’s hand touching my hair I’m here, I’m there We rise and we fall The laughs and cries The patterns that we’ve drawn With childhood’s crayons And I recall the days we danced away I remember you saying my name. Now it’s all so small, ‘cause the trees have grown tall And I know we’ll never return I hear her voice My mother sings “rejoice in the Lord” On sunday morning And I recall the days we danced away I remember you saying my name Now it’s all so small, ‘cause trees grow tall And I know we’ll never return We’ll never return, but we will fold the time Hold it like paper leaves Forests will be built out of our memories And we will master time like a clock We will not grow old We will always be, forever see So we can hold the days we danced away I remember the steps that we made Now it’s all so small, ‘cause trees grow tall And I know we’ll never return We’ll never return We’ll never return
4.
You and Me 03:34
YOU AND ME How many times I have tried to reach your heart It’s been so long I don’t know where to start I waited for the wind of change Waited for the summer rain I waited for you and me How many words that I have said did break your heart I feel so lost I wanted just a little part I waited for the birds to sing Waited for a sign of spring I waited for you and me For you so endlessly I tried, I tried I tried to make it right How many nights I’ve been praying for the stars I’ve been so cold I don’t know where you are I waited for the sun to rise Waited for bluer skies I waited for you and me For you so endlessly I waited for you and me For you so endlessly Make it right Make it right I tried to make it right
5.
More 02:25
MORE Take me to the break of day Fly me to the moon Show me where the colors fade I want to meet the dawn Fly away, I’ll fly away Where no one has gone before I want to see the world from upside down I want to see more and more and more and more Teach me about the sun, the stars And how a tree grows old Show me where the rainbow ends I want to meet that pot of gold I’m gonna fly away Where no one has gone before I want to see the world from upside down I want to see more and more and more and more And more and more and more Take me by the hand my love Give me one more day I want to fall asleep in your arms And wake up yesterday Fly away, fly away, with you right by my side This dream will never end and love will fill the sky Take me Make me Awake me Hold me Closely Love me
6.
On the Road 04:12
ON THE ROAD The sun slowly rises over land made of gold Dusty roads, where no one goes I see clouds slowly passing by Shadows disappear And I’m lost in this moment There’s no time or space in this place And I’m on, on the road again Driving this no man’s land, here I go No one’s telling me where this journey ends But I’ll follow, I’ll follow the road (Oh, how the wind picks me up and puts me down) My thoughts drifting far behind They turn in drops of gold Raining down on thirsty grounds Oh, the water, the water rises high Washes it all way And I’m lost in this moment I’m here in this place No time or space And I’m on, on the road again Driving this no man’s land, here I go No one’s telling me where this journey ends But I’ll follow, I’ll follow the road (Oh, how the wind picks me up and puts me down) (Oh how the wind picks me up and puts me down) (Oh how the wind picks me up and puts me down) My windows are open And the road’s dust is talking Whispers fill my ears And I’m here in this moment I’m found in this place No time, no time or space Here I am on the road again Driving this no man’s land, here I go No one’s telling me where this journey ends But I’ll follow, I’ll follow the road I’ll follow the road (Oh how the wind picks me up and puts me down) (Oh how the wind picks me up and puts me down)

Hymn 03:35
HYMN Church bells ring While the angels sing Hallelujah to you With their voices high in a clear blue sky They’re singing glory to your name They’re singing glory to your name Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Songs of joy, bring peace and joy Songs of joy, bring peace and joy On this holy ground The trees bow down They lift their voice to you With their branches high to a clear blue sky They sing Hallelujah Hallelujah Songs of joy, of peace and joy Songs of joy, of peace and joy Amen

about

“Thomson demonstrates that rare type of dedication to authenticity, focusing inwards to find the right balance of sound and spirit and delivering it outwards with passion and care.”
Music Week (UK)

Marle Thomson is a story teller. Personal stories that are universal at the same time and therefore very recognizable. Her songs deal with themes such as the courage to show vulnerability, the processing of loss, self-acceptance and the courage to let go, without becoming heavy. There is always hope and room for a new beginning. Her voice and songs contain deep layering, a mix of strength and fragility. Or a so-called "saudade" a sense of desire and melancholy, which her audience is touched by.

THE CANOPY was released in 2016 and form a set of songs that Marle wrote in her home studio, while making demo recordings. She then asked Paul Willemsen and Marcel Tegelaar to work on the final production of the songs together. She describes the style of the record as ‘soulful space pop' with a touch of folk, r&b and jazz.

The title of this EP, according to the singer, is symbolic for the writing process and the layers of the songs. Marle did not rush the writing process; she took her time to discover the sound of THE CANOPY. "It started with writing on guitar, which was new to me. I initially played and programmed everything myself. This proved to be an inspiring way to work because I discovered new forms of writing. Besides, it was fun to play and record everything myself, it has been a very educational process. I wanted to know what parts I would play myself and which sounds inspire me."

Marle went into retreat for a while to find out what kind of music she wanted to make, "While writing you find yourself, so to speak, above and beneath the canopy. You can suddenly have a panoramic view, a look over the slowly-growing forest. At other times you venture to the ground, where patterns of shadow and light alternate. The new songs were created layer by layer and they felt natural to me." Of this, THE CANOPY is the end result.
